When this Far North bay fires it fires properly, a gnarly drop into a hollow barrel that has caught out more than one visiting surfer. Advanced-to-expert terrain for the explorer, not the day-tripper.

About Henderson Bay

Henderson Bay is a wide sweep of sand that faces northeast into the South Pacific with nothing in the way, so NE groundswells arrive with full energy and bigger ocean than most beach breaks further south. The reef sections at either end of the beach hold the best of it, powerful hollow walls with a steep drop into the barrel. This is advanced-to-expert terrain when it lines up, not a forgiving beach for working on your bottom turn.

The bay sits north of Doubtless Bay on the Far North's east coast, well off any tourist route, and feels like the edge of the country, which it close to is. It is a place for the self-sufficient in every sense: no shops, no patrol, no surf school, no cafe at the carpark, so what you bring is what you have. The road in is long, and the final run of Henderson Bay Road past Houhora is unsealed, so once you arrive you are properly on your own. This is the surf experience for the explorer rather than anyone after an easy session.

Local tips

  • Henderson is part of a chain of Far North east coast beaches that includes Taupo Bay, Tokerau and Karikari to the south, conditions changing as the wind shifts across the peninsula, so trust the forecast but be ready to drive to whichever beach is best on the day. Wave conditions can flip in an afternoon once the sea breeze sets in.
  • The full Far North loop is a multi-day surf trip in itself, with empty roads and dramatic landscapes, so pick a base in Kaitaia or Mangonui and explore the peninsula rather than chasing a single spot.
  • Ninety Mile Beach is a 90 minute drive west and works on opposite swells, so most weekends one coast or the other is firing when Henderson is too small or too onshore. The Te Paki Stream sand dune drive at the top of Ninety Mile is worth the detour.

Things to know

  • Submerged rocks sit at both reef ends, so a blown takeoff on the hollow walls carries real consequence. Pick your line off the back of the peak and treat the drop with respect, because this is no place to be caught inside.
  • The inside shorey gets shallow at low tide, so on a smaller day watch a few sets break first to see where the sand bottoms out before you commit to a paddle.
  • Rips can form between the sand banks when the swell rises, especially after a big swell rebuilds the beach, so scout the water from the dune and note where the water is running out.
  • There is no lifeguard patrol and phone reception is patchy, so surf with company and let someone know your plan before you leave Kaitaia.
  • Cold can creep in on a long winter session this far north with no shelter or facilities to warm up in, so wear enough rubber and do not push a session past your limit when there is nobody around.

Access & facilities

Getting there

Parking

Free beach parking at the end of Henderson Bay Road. No fees, no walk-in required, easy beach access. Fills lightly on weekends but rarely full.

Shops, cafes & fuel

No shops at the beach. Last supplies are at Kaitaia or Awanui, 40 minutes south. Stock up before the drive in. Pukenui village 15 minutes south has a small general store.
