About Orewa
Orewa is the closest surf beach of any quality to Auckland's northern suburbs, and that accessibility makes it one of the most-visited spots on the east coast. The beach runs for two kilometres of open sand backed by the busy Orewa township, with the river mouth at the northern end producing a shifting sandbar that's the spot's real surf interest. The bar can produce a soft left on the northern side and a punchier right on the southern side when the swell direction is right.
Because Orewa sits inside the Hauraki Gulf, behind the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and the islands offshore, swells arrive heavily filtered. That is why the spot rarely produces serious waves and why it suits beginners and longboard riders so well: the surf is smaller, softer, and far more forgiving than the open coast 30 minutes north at Te Ārai. The reserve is managed by Auckland Council in Ngāti Manuhiri rohe. Orewa Surf Life Saving Club, one of the oldest in New Zealand, patrols the beach through summer. Aotearoa Surf runs lessons here for Auckland-based learners when conditions and tides favour it over Te Ārai or Forestry.

Local tips
- Orewa works best when a proper NE swell has been running for at least 24 hours. A short-period wind swell tends to close out the bar before it lines up. Check the swell direction and period before driving north, or check the AS forecast from Te Ārai which tells you when Orewa will be on
- The river mouth bar at the northern end is the best part of the beach when it's working. It shifts with the seasons, so walk down to the river before paddling and look at where the channel and the bar are sitting that week
- Beginners and kids do better at the middle section of the beach, away from the river mouth currents. The waves are softer and more rolling, the bottom is flat sand, and you can spread out even on a busy weekend
- Aotearoa Surf operates at Orewa for Auckland-based learners when conditions and tides favour it. Te Ārai and Forestry are more consistent waves though, so if you have time and transport for the drive north, that's where the action is. Reach out and we'll pick the right beach for the day
Things to know
- Orewa Surf Life Saving Club patrols the beach through summer, approximately Labour Weekend to Easter, daily over December and January. When the flags are up, swim and surf between them. Outside the patrol window, treat the surf as unpatrolled and surf with company
- The river mouth at the northern end produces rips on bigger swells. The current runs through the mouth on the outgoing tide and along the bar on the incoming, so watch the water before paddling and avoid the mouth directly after heavy rain
- The middle section of the beach is sand-bottomed, soft, and forgiving on the moderate gulf-filtered swells that Orewa typically gets. Beginners and kids do better here, well clear of the river mouth current
- Orewa can get busy on weekend mornings in summer with families, lessons, and Auckland day-trippers. Arrive early for parking and to claim space, especially over the December-January holiday window
