About Mid Shore

Mid Shore is two waves in one spot. The main draw is a left hand point that breaks off the rocky headland at the north end of the beach, a punchy and wally wall that needs a decent S swell before it switches on and then reels off a long, satisfying left. Alongside it the sandy beach throws up changeable peaks, lefts and rights both, punchy and fun and forgiving enough for a confident intermediate, while the point rewards more committed surfers when it fires. It comes alive on a SE or S swell with a NW wind blowing offshore, and it likes the tide mid to high, dropping lower when you want the point to stand up. Get the swell direction and the tide together and you can have a clean, well shaped left almost entirely to yourself.

The setting is part of the appeal and part of the work. This is a genuinely remote stretch of coast east of Waipara, reached down Mount Cass Road to a farm gate, then on foot across paddocks and down the hill to the sand. The land you cross is private working farm, so the golden rule is to ask permission, leave every gate as you found it and bring nothing that you are not prepared to carry back out. There are no facilities and no patrol here, just limestone country, fossil studded rocks and the open Pacific. Treat it with respect and it pays you back with space and quiet that the more accessible Canterbury beaches simply cannot offer.

Local tips

  • Wait for the swell to swing properly south. The point needs size and a clean S direction to link up its full length, and on the right day the reward is a long left that just keeps going, so it is worth sitting through a few smaller, wonkier ones rather than paddling straight out.
  • Surf it on a mid to high tide for the beach peaks, then let it drop a little if you want the point to stand up and wall. A NW offshore grooming a SE or S swell is the magic combination, and it holds its shape better here than at many of the more exposed Canterbury breaks.
  • Build a North Canterbury day around it. Motunau Beach is about fifteen minutes south and Gore Bay roughly forty minutes north, both surfable on the same S swell, so if Mid Shore is not quite working you have ready backups within a short drive.
  • Stop in Amberley on the way to load up, because once you leave the highway there is nothing. The Waipara wine country is right on the doorstep too, an easy non surfing detour for anyone travelling with you.

Things to know

  • The point only switches on with a decent S swell, so check the chart before committing to the walk; on a northerly or easterly day, or anything under chest high, expect to surf the beach peaks instead and bring a board with a bit more volume for them.
  • It breaks over a rocky headland at the point, so time your entry and exit off the rocks carefully, watch the sets sweeping you down the wall toward them, and keep clear when it is overhead.
  • This is an unpatrolled, remote beach with no lifeguards and the nearest help a long way off, so surf with a mate, tell someone your plan and know your own limits in the water.
  • Strong rips run along Pegasus Bay beaches and can pull hard near the river mouth and gutters, so read the bank before you paddle out and use the current to get out the back rather than fighting it.
  • Cold is the quiet danger here, with winter water down around 9 to 11 degrees, so wear the full 5/4mm with boots, gloves and hood and do not stay out past the point your hands stop working.
  • Cell coverage is patchy to nonexistent on this part of the coast, so do not rely on your phone in an emergency and carry water and warm dry clothes for after.

Access & facilities

Getting there

From Christchurch head north on State Highway 1 for around an hour, through Amberley to Waipara, then turn right onto Mount Cass Road and follow it east to the end, where it turns to gravel and finishes at a farm. From there it is a walk across two paddocks and down the hill to the beach, roughly twenty five minutes on foot. The land is private working farm (Glenafric), so ask permission before crossing, leave gates as you find them and note that dogs are not allowed.

Parking

Informal parking only, on the grass and verge by the farm gate at the end of Mount Cass Road. There is no formal car park, so park considerately, do not block gateways or farm access, and be respectful of the property you are parking on.

Toilets & showers

None at the beach. The nearest public toilets are back in Amberley, about half an hour away by road. Bring water to rinse off, as there is no tap or shower anywhere near the break.

Shops, cafes & fuel

No shops or fuel anywhere near the spot. Amberley, around 10km south of the Mount Cass turnoff, is the place to stock up, with a Woolworths and a Four Square supermarket, a handful of cafes such as the Topp Stop, and a Zed petrol station. Waipara itself is mostly wineries rather than services.

Accommodation

Closest is Waipara Sleepers at Waipara (about 10km from Amberley), a quirky camp with restored railway carriages plus powered and tent sites. Gore Bay, roughly forty minutes north, has the council run Gore Bay and Buxton campgrounds with hot showers and beach access, and there are baches to rent through Bookabach and Airbnb around Gore Bay and Motunau. Amberley has motels and B and Bs for a more standard base.

Camping

No camping at the break itself. The nearest options are the simple Motunau Beach campsite about fifteen minutes south (flush toilets, honesty box) and the Gore Bay and Buxton campgrounds further north. Freedom camping in the Hurunui District is allowed only for certified self contained vehicles and is prohibited or restricted at many sites, so check the Hurunui District Council freedom camping map before you stay anywhere overnight.
