About New Brighton
New Brighton is a long sandy beach break that runs north and south of the famous New Brighton Pier, and the pier has been the making of it. The structure interrupts the current and builds sandbanks on either side, with the south ramp side usually holding the best bank and cleanest shape, while peaks scatter up and down the rest of the beach. It is variable terrain that shifts with every tide, wind and swell, so you read the banks fresh each session. The wave works on NE and E swell with W or SW winds blowing it offshore, and comes into its own from mid to high tide. Rides are mostly short and it can throw a heavy little shorey, but when a solid swell lines up with offshore wind the pier banks fire out punchy walls and the odd barrel. It genuinely surfs better than it looks from the car park, with room for every level from first timers to experts.
The beach sits about 11 km east of central Christchurch, reached out through Linwood and Aranui to Marine Parade, where North Ramp and South Ramp car parks bracket the pier. This is the city's seaside heart, anchored by the 300 metre pier, the longest ocean pier in Australasia, with the New Brighton library, He Puna Taimoana hot saltwater pools, the Saturday market and a much loved whale playground all clustered at the landward end. The eastern suburbs took the brunt of the 2011 earthquakes and the precinct you see today is the result of a sustained community rebuild, so it is worth supporting the local cafes and businesses when you visit.

Local tips
- On the right morning, W or SW wind behind a fresh NE swell of 1 to 1.5 metres, the south ramp banks break far faster and hollower than they look from shore, so park at the south ramp, walk the bank and back yourself, the peaks here reward anyone who commits.
- There are two main car parks, the north ramp and the south ramp either side of the pier, plus pull offs and walkways all along Marine Parade, so if a peak is crowded just drive the strand and find your own bank.
- Aotearoa Surf runs school and group surf programmes from New Brighton, along with Sumner, North Canterbury and across the region, a good option if you want coaching on these forgiving beginner friendly peaks before going it alone.
- Warm up after a cold session in the He Puna Taimoana hot saltwater pools right by the pier, then make a morning of it with the library, the whale playground and the Saturday market all within a short walk.
- For an alternative when the wind or swell direction is wrong, Sumner and Scarborough sit about 7.5 km south and Taylors Mistake a little beyond, both worth the short drive.
Things to know
- The prevailing northeasterly blows straight onshore and tends to ruin the surf by mid morning, so treat New Brighton as a dawn patrol and aim to be in the water by 7am before the sea breeze fills in.
- Banks move constantly with the tide and sand, so walk the beach and watch a few sets before paddling out rather than committing to the first peak you see, the south ramp side most often holds the best shape.
- Keep clear of fishing lines cast off the pier if you surf near the structure, and never jump or be pushed off the pier itself, it is not safe and locals advise against it.
- Stay well away from the flagged swimming areas near the surf clubs, especially in summer when the beach is busy with swimmers.
- It is an exposed open coast beach with rips that shift around the bars, so identify your exit before you paddle out and use the pier and shore markers to check you are not drifting.
Access & facilities
Getting there
New Brighton lies about 11 km east of central Christchurch. From the city head out through Linwood and Aranui along Pages Road, cross the Avon River and at the roundabout turn for Marine Parade, where the North Ramp and South Ramp car parks sit either side of the pier. It is roughly a 15 minute drive from the city centre and well served by buses.
Parking
Two main sealed car parks bracket the pier, the North Ramp off Hawke Street and the South Ramp off Beresford Street, both giving direct beach access, with the south ramp the closer pick for the best banks. There is also free street parking and further pull offs and beach access ways all along Marine Parade, plus onsite parking at He Puna Taimoana. Note the North and South Ramp car parks are locked overnight.
Toilets & showers
Public toilets and changing rooms are available at the beach by the surf clubs and around the pier precinct, and He Puna Taimoana has full changing, shower and toilet facilities for paying visitors. A rinse is easy to come by given how built up the seafront is.
Shops, cafes & fuel
The New Brighton Mall seaside shopping centre sits a short walk back from the beach with a supermarket, cafes and bars, and there are more cafes around the pier including Salt on the Pier in the library building and the Saturdays cafe at the hot pools. The nearest fuel is the Z petrol station on Hawke Street in New Brighton.
Accommodation
South Brighton Holiday Park, the closest seaside holiday park to Christchurch, is about a 9 minute walk from the beach with cabins, self contained units and powered and unpowered sites. Beyond that, New Brighton and the wider eastern suburbs offer a spread of motels, baches and Bookabach or Airbnb rentals, with the full range of Christchurch hotels a short drive away in the city.
Camping
There is no campground at the beach itself, but South Brighton Holiday Park nearby covers tents and campervans. Freedom camping along this coast is tightly restricted under the Christchurch City Council Freedom Camping Bylaw: certified self contained vehicles only within the City Coastal restricted zone, with strict night limits, and the North and South Ramp car parks beside the pier are locked at night. Use the holiday park rather than risk a fine.
