About Raglan Waikeri / Manu

Manu Bay needs little introduction to anyone who has ever watched a surfing film. Featured in The Endless Summer and etched into the consciousness of surfers worldwide, it is New Zealand's most iconic wave, a long mechanical left-hand point break that peels across weathered volcanic basalt for up to 300 metres on a proper swell. The takeoff is the commitment, a hollow ledging drop into the open face that immediately demands your attention. From there the wave works through a long walling mid-section before easing into a rolly inside where you can pick your finish. It fires best at mid-to-high tide on a SW swell, and on the biggest connected swells Manu links up with Whale Bay above it, and on truly rare days all the way through from Indicators, a ride that can last minutes and cover over a kilometre.

Manu is not a beginner wave. The rocky bottom, the significant drop, and the culture of the lineup all require confidence and experience. Surfers visiting for the first time should expect a pecking order at the takeoff zone and an unforgiving response to drop-ins. The point sits within the rohe of Ngāti Māhanga, part of the Tainui iwi confederation, and the town's full name is Whāingaroa, meaning the long pursuit, a reference to the Tainui waka's search for its destination. For the intermediate-to-advanced surfer with the patience to wait their turn, this is one of the great surfing experiences New Zealand offers.

Local tips

  • Time it for the sweet spot of 4-6ft with light SE winds at mid-to-high tide. Below 2ft the inside goes flat and above 10ft it starts closing out in sections, so the mid-range is where the wave really lines up.
  • Boneyards, the outside section further around the point, is a shorter, punchier alternative when the main lineup gets crowded. Fewer people know about it, so it is worth the extra paddle.
  • When Manu is too crowded, onshore or simply too big, spread out across the other Raglan points: Whale Bay just up the line tends to handle bigger swells, Indicators / Tirohanga takes a wider wind range, and Ngarunui Beach five minutes back has beginner-friendly peaks. On a winter weekday morning you can have cold, glassy, empty waves to yourself, one of the best surf experiences in the country.
  • The Raglan township carries a strong arts and surf-town character, with cafes, restaurants and surf shops (Raglan Surf Co, Raglan Surf Hire) along Bow Street and the Saturday Volcano Cafe market.
  • For a flat day, walk the Bridal Veil Falls track twenty minutes inland or climb Mount Karioi, the 756m volcanic cone south of town that is a wāhi tapu (sacred site), with a summit that takes in the entire Raglan harbour and point system.

Things to know

  • The bottom is volcanic basalt and both the takeoff and the inside section break over boulders, so a wipeout can easily mean rock contact. Wear booties, and stay away if you are not comfortable moving around in rocky water.
  • The rock jump from the point is slippery and awkward with a board under your arm, so first-timers should use the boat ramp paddle-out from the other side even though it is a longer paddle.
  • Pecking order is real at the Manu takeoff zone, so sit wide on your first session, watch how the wave breaks, and earn your position. The lineup is small, the locals are dedicated, and drop-ins are noticed and not forgotten.
  • Manu fills with the swell, so on a clean 4-6ft SW day the carpark is full by sunrise and the lineup gets thick. If you want the headline section you accept the crowd, or paddle for one of the quieter peaks around the point.
