Best surf spots in Waikato / Raglan

The outermost of Raglan's three point breaks, reached only on foot. Long, fast and hollow when it's on, and revered by surfers who've made the walk.

The wave that put New Zealand surfing on the world map, immortalised in The Endless Summer. A long mechanical left that asks for confidence at the takeoff and rewards it with one of the longest rides in the country.

The forgiving sandy beach around the headland from Raglan's famous points, also known as Wainui Beach. Multiple peaks, a summer lifeguard patrol, and the gentlest introduction to surfing on the Whāingaroa coast.

Sunset Beach and the Reef at the mouth of NZ's longest river. A consistent beach break for all levels at Sunset, with a serious left reef around the south point that holds proper west coast size when it's on.

The quiet escape from the Raglan crowd: a long, empty black-sand beach south of town that fires when the points are onshore or maxed out. Multiple peaks, plenty of swell, and often only a handful of surfers out.
