Banks Peninsula Weekender

City surf to volcanic wilderness in one weekend. Saturday at Sumner and Taylors Mistake, ten minutes from the city, then over the hill to Hickory Bay's booming beach break and Magnet Bay's long left point on the peninsula's far side. The contrast is the whole point.

Christchurch's home beach. Easy peaks off the esplanade, cafes across the road, and Scarborough's corner holds shape when the east swell has some push.

Day 1

Taylors Mistake

Canterbury · 3hr session

Beach break · Reef All levels · Powerful when bigger

Over the headland for the afternoon. More swell, fewer people, a proper little surf valley. The cave baches on the walk in are worth the look alone.

Day 2

Hickory Bay

Canterbury · 4hr session

Beach break Intermediate, all levels on small days

An hour and a half of winding volcanic ridgelines, the last part gravel. Powerful peaks on a remote farm-backed beach. Check it from the hill before committing the walk down.

Day 2

Magnet Bay

Canterbury · 3hr session

Left point Intermediate to advanced

Loop home via the southern bays. Long walling left point that needs a solid south swell, and when it has one it is the best wave on the peninsula.
